Testing & analysing your web site

Just to round off my earlier post about this web site and the software that I use to construct it, when I’m done there are a few checks that it’s worth making to ensure that your hard work is being received at the other end in the form that you expect. So here are a couple of web sites that I use to make those checks.

• Browsershots – produces a screen shot of your site as it appears in various browsers with different screen sizes, resolutions etc.
• Sitescan – checks your web pages for correct setup of Google Analytics
• Feedvalidator – checks that your RSS and Atom feeds are properly formatted
• W3 Validator – checks to see if your HTML has valid markup

Lastly, to get some idea of who is visiting your site and what they’re doing whilst they’re there, I use:

• Google Analytics – the ubiquitous visitor analysis tool
• Feedburner – for information about readers of your news feeds
