The free desktop wallpaper for November comes from a lobdra – or school for novice monks – located just outside the town of Jakar in Eastern Bhutan. Wandichholing Dzong was built as a palace and was the main residence of the first King of Bhutan. It is still owned by the royal family but is now home to a number of novice monks who study in the rooms overlooking the central courtyard.
The palace retains a wonderful faded charm. The external walls are decorated with beautiful, painted artwork, predominantly blue, which has led the dzong to be known locally as the Blue Palace. Inside, the classrooms are relatively bare but provide a wonderful setting for photographs and I was fortunate to be invited into the classroms on two occasions.
On the first occasion, I took a photo of this monk, sitting on the floor and studying texts. We were the only people in the building at this point and it felt like a tremendous privilege to be able to photograph in such impressive surroundings and in such gorgeous light.

Lovely photo but you can’t actually see the dates, any chanc eof a tweak?
Hi Zoe, the dates are purposely pretty faint, I didn’t want to spoil the aesthetics. But if you’re having trouble seeing them then it might be time for a quick monitor calibration session.
Yes at home, but it might take me a while to calibrate all the monitors I get to use in the hospital!
Are you telling me that you’re installing my desktop wallpaper on NHS computers young lady? I like your style. Although I’m surprised they allow it.
