Crossing the border from Laos to Thailand was straightforward and relatively swift so there was time to play at Nong Khai station before boarding the overnight sleeper back to Bangkok.
This seemed to be the only train coming through the station that evening and it was there hours before departure time, giving me the opportunity to wander through the carriages, photographing the empty compartments and even inadvertently stepping into the Guards’ sleeping quarters.
I’ll try to include a fuller report on the train here soon as I know it’s a popular route from Thailand to Laos and back and there are a lot of people who wonder whether it’s better to fly or go on the overnight sleeper. Your correspondent’s view, unbiased as always, will appear here shortly.
Awesome ‘God’ rays in the sky in the last image, nice perspective too. Great work as ever Gavin,
Chris
Gavin,
I really like the whole series. I especially like the monk sleeping on his seat. Please tell me the photo of the bunks is not the first class sleeper!
If you’re into trains I highly recommend the train from Phnom Penh to Battambang. I did it a couple of years ago and it’s a hoot.

That’s some wonderful light you’ve got going on in all of them! The first three I especially like
I am enjoying your work and comments. Look forward to meeting you in May.
Excellent set Gavin.
I enjoyed these very much. Thanks for posting. I first visited Nong Khai 10 years ago and I think the train station hasn’t changed one bit.
Gavin,
Nice example of HDR!
I’m looking forward to learning from you.
