Today, I’ll be mostly flying to Kathmandu. For anyone not familiar with ‘The Fast Show’ and ‘Jesse’s Diets‘ that reference will be lost.
Whilst in Nepal, I hope to re-create the manly pose favoured by these two rugged individuals. This shot of me and my good friend Matthijs taken at Annapurna Sanctuary in 2004. Taken shortly after sunrise with one of the Annapurnas behind. It had taken a week to walk to this point and we had survived the unwelcome attentions of gun-toting Maoist insurgents, altitude sickness and a diet consisting almost solely of Dahl Baht; hot, sweet Chai and Mars bars. It was, thinking back, probably the finest two weeks of my life.
I’m also looking forward to meeting up again with the guide who became my friend during that jaunt to Annapurna. Finjo lives in a small village, a day’s bone-shaking drive from Kathmandu. The picture below is of his daughter, Susmita, taken in the family kitchen. Finjo is standing beside the fire, Susmita is gazing up at him with a look of daughterly adoration. Clearly, her dad is her hero. Frankly, her dad was my hero too for much of the time we spent together.
But I digress. In lieu of the fulsome posts that you’ve come to expect – and deserve, here are a few tidbits to keep you entertained whilst I’m surfing the baggage carousel at KTM Arrivals.
Leslie Burns-Dell-Acqua discusses web sites and portfolio books. Leslie’s podcasts provide great marketing advice for photographers and this brief intro to web sites and portfolios is a good starting point for anyone looking to enhance their marketing impact.
London police are deleting tourists’ digital photographs. Covering themselves in glory once again, our Boys in Blue forego any notions of due process and make it up on the spot. Evenin’ all.
This just in: Jack Kurtz recommends we take a look at Kenneth Jarecke’s posts about ethics in photography. I’ve had a quick scan through and copied them to read on the plane. Looks like interesting reading.
The rapping flight attendant will cheer you up. Although, if I’m completely honest, if I took my seat on a flight and heard a steward saying that there would be “audience participation” it wouldn’t fill me with joyful optimism for the flight ahead.
And, finally, Number 37 in the series: Things I Wish I Had Said.
Have fun up on the roof of the world!

Ahhhhhhh…..I wish one day I can trek in Nepal too…I took the mountain flight and it was awesome. I’m sure a closer encounter with the Annapurnas would be a life-changing experience. Namaste!

Thanks for sharing that ^. Found the comments highly amusing.
Susmita is gorgeous! Lovely lovely photo.
As for reenacting the top one … naw, nothing to worry. The youthfulness is still well restored! ;p
Have a great time up on the roof…and nice to see that photo of little Susmita again, I think it’s one of my favourites of yours.
May she always worship her dad and never get to that “interesting” teenage stage.
Gav! I was going through all your posts and I found this memorable picture. Of course I should discuss the commission fee with you because of publishing my (unrecognizable) face. It gave me shivers to see it again.
Finally, after so many years, we go back to Asia again. We are going to visit the Philippines to visit family and stay there for 3 weeks with our little son. Hanneke left a message on your Facebook. Would there be a chance to bump into each other again? How marvellous would that be! PS: we slowed down on the red wine, so no worries
