Sadly the metaphoric clouds hanging over Bangkok today aren’t nearly as light and fluffy as these, taken from my balcony first thing this morning.
Troops and protesters clashed overnight and the BBC is reporting that tear gas and bullets were used. Many people have been injured and there is talk of the battle moving towards a “climax”. None of which bodes well.
It’s such a shame and I really can’t claim to understand what provokes people to act in this way. I’m just not familiar enough with the Thai culture or the local politics to offer any sort of informed comment. All I can say is that it very nearly defies belief to see Thai people acting in this way. I can’t believe that those involved have any inkling of the damage that these conflicts do to the country’s reputation overseas.
I wanted to post something quickly before I head off to Malaysia for a few days, assuming I can get to the airport OK. Many thanks to all of you who have asked about the situation locally, I wish I had more to tell you. Thanks too for the many wishes to “stay safe”. It’s actually difficult to reconcile the dramatic pictures seen on the BBC with the peace and quiet surrounding my neighbourhood at present and it feels very calm now.
I’ll be updating my Twitter account this week. You can follow me online.
