Photographs of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur by day and night

I’m working in Kuala Lumpur for the Malaysian AIDS Council and have managed to snag a hotel room with a direct view of the impressive Petronas Towers. When I arrived this afternoon the daily monsoon downfall was imminent, the dark clouds making for a great backdrop. At dusk I was treated to a different view of the towers as they began to glow against the night sky.

In retrospect, it’s interesting to see the slight variation in composition. The foreground building with the pyramid roof serves to hold the picture together in the daytime shot, creating a kind of book-end to hold the eye in the frame. At dusk, the same building is lit with a golden light which makes it a very dominant part of the composition, a third element beside the brilliant white of the towers. Consequently, it too needs space to breath. Cover up the left-hand side of the dusk image to see what I mean.

And now by way of shattering the illusion that I constructed so carefully in the images above, here’s a behind-the-scenes view of the interior of my glamorous hotel room shortly after I arrived.

    Nice one!

Both are nice, but I really like the first one. Beautiful sky (we hardly ever see that sky in Arizona). It has a sort of Ayn Randish look.

Are you glad to be out of the madness of Bangkok?

I like the third shot best – the one where you’ve framed the towers nicely in your window pane :)

    Now there’s a room with a view!

I once watched a documentry about building those towers. It is a very impressive engineering feat. I like the white glow, but find the yellow building a bit distracting.

Chris, I agree. The gold building is too much. I guess I could have toned it down a bit or perhaps shifted it out of the way completely. I actually prefer the first shot a lot, the glowing towers are OK but a bit glitzy for my taste. Thanks for the feedback.
