Bangkok Photo Walk: Travelling Light

I’m just about to grab a quick sandwich, brew up a pot of tea and then I’ll be heading out to lead walkers on the 2009 Bangkok Photo Walk.

Before I go, here’s a quick guide to the gear I’m taking this afternoon. It’s a light day, no tripod, no big lenses, just the essential kit to allow me to get the pictures whilst enjoying the company of 50+ other enthusiastic photographers as we wander through Chinatown.

Photo Walk Gear

1. Pod beanbag, ideal for impromptu long-exposure shots
2. Business Cards
3. Colorspace Hyperdrive with removable 250Gb drive for in-the-field backups
4. Blower brush
5. Battery pack for 5D MKII vertical grip
6. Spare battery for Canon G9
7. Canon G9 – in case anyone forgets their camera!
8. Trusty Nancy Chandler map of Bangkok complete with my scribbled workshop notes
9. Think Tank card wallet stuffed with 4Gb and 16Gb CF cards
10. Lensbaby aperture tool
11. Lensbaby Composer
12. Spare AA & AAA batteries
13. Lens caps
14. Lens cloth
15. Electrical tape – nearly out!
16. Spirit level

Not included in the photo but essential

1. Remote release
2. Umbrella
3. Waterproof bag
4. Spare, clean shirt. In a recent workshop a pigeon gave me an unwanted present. I was pleased to be able to put a clean shirt on
5. The usual gentleman photographer’s necessities: tissues, hand-gel, cash, sunglasses, tea bags and a pair of buffs.

And not forgetting… a camera!

Bangkok Photo Walk: Canon EOS 5D MKIIA Canon EOS 5D MKII gets an outing today. Also a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens, the perfect medium-range zoom with an aperture wide-enough to work in the low-light of the Chinatown market. And I really do need a new map!

If you’re joining a Photo Walk today then I hope you have a great time and get some memorable images. My good friend and wildly talented photographer Matt Brandon has offered to swap judging responsibilities with me so he’ll be choosing the lucky winning image from my walk and I’ll be picking the best of the bunch from his walk in Penang, Malaysia.

  1. Understandably your photowalk was filled before I even realized that registrations were open. I’m going over to the one in Lumpinee and Silom. Have a great outing. I love Chinatown. I can wander around that area for countless hours and never get bored. Lost maybe, but not bored!

  2. [...] saw this post by Gavin Gough and was inspired to do a simillar post. Here’s what I will bring to the photo [...]

    Gavin,

Do you use the AA battery magazine in the 5D Mark II? What kind of battery life do you get?

  4. My pack will be a little lighter – no map needed. Where we’re walking only has about three roads…and I think they all lead to the same place. Gotta love rural living.

Looking forward to seeing your group’s images. Have a great walk!

  5. Diego Jose says:

Good luck and have an awesome photo walk, Gavin!

  6. Lesley Fisher says:

Wow! So sad to be stuck in Samui! Hope you had a great day!

  7. Gavin says:

Jack, I carry that AA pack as a spare with two of the usual 5D batteries in the vertical grip. I’ve never had to resort to the AA pack but it’s reassuring to know it’s there and would probably get me to the end of a day in an emergency. Good thing is, I always carry a bag of AA batteries anyway and I guess you could buy some in most places so it’s like having an inexhaustible supply. Lesley, yes, being “stuck” in Samui is everyone’s idea of a nightmare! Thanks for dropping by.
