Lightroom: Gavin’s Greyscale Gradient V2.0

For those of you who found the Lightroom Greyscale/Grayscale gradient to be a useful tool when running Lightroom on a laptop, here’s version 2.0. Thanks to Sean Phillips for noting that the graphic needed a way to identify the end of the scale, hopefully this mirror-image graphic does that.
Here are the instructions for installing in Lightroom again. NB: Don’t click the graphic above, it’s just a screenshot showing the graphic in place.
- Download the Lightroom Greyscale Gradient
- In Lightroom, select [Lightroom] [Identity Plate Setup] (Mac) or [Edit] [Identity Plate Setup] (Windows)
- Ensure the [Enable Identity Plate] checkbox is ticked
- Click on [Use a Graphical identity plate]
- Click on [Locate File]. Locate Gavin’s Greyscale Gradient (LR-Greyscale.jpg)
- Click [OK]
- Check that you can see all tones, from white to black on your display.
- Sit back, put your feet up and light up a cigar. Your work here is done.

Thanks Gavin, this’ll be useful!
By the way, I just want to say you’ve been one of my biggest inspirations for photographing people and I just started my own 100 Strangers project: http://diegojosephoto.blogspot.com/2009/08/stranger-1.html
Thanks for putting your work out there!

Cheers Gavin! I’m using it on my S-IPS monitor too. Good way to quickly check if I can see the different tones, since the light here can be different (sunlight through the window, stuff like that).
I do calibrate my monitors, but it’s a nice touch
Hi Gavin.
While I don’t use lightroom, I love people coming up with these sorts of solutions and sharing them.
Really great. Good on you.
Cheers,
Glen.
The first one was great, this one is even better. Thanks again. Since a laptop’s my only choice at the moment, this makes me feel better about my processing.

Hey Gavin, fantastic improvement! I love the double scale…

[...] Matt Kloskowski picked up on the Lightroom Greyscale Gradient that I posted recently and mentioned it on Lightroom Killer Tips. Version 2.0 has now been downloaded almost 8,000 times. You can download the graphic and view installation instructions HERE. [...]

Great idea! Thanks for putting this together
[...] Gavin Gough is a freelance travel photographer who came up with a great idea. Instead of having a name on the top of a Lightroom library, why not find out if your monitor is calibrated correctly. Gavin created the perfect sized Grayscale Identity Plate graphic for Lightroom. I’ve been using it since for a couple of days now and it is really neat. This is a great example of a simple idea to improve your photo editing. [...]
Thanks for a useful idea. It shows I need to adjust my laptop screen. I often forget my name so I took the liberty of adding it in a tasteful grey for my version.
Can you think of anything useful we can do with the Lightroom panel end marks? I think they can be customized too.

I’m having trouble downloading the graphic. Maybe you could tell me what the problem is. When I click on the link it takes me to a blank page with just the graphic. I right-click and have tried ‘save image as’ and ‘copy’, but when I save as it saves as a .php file and I don’t have a program to open that. It won’t save as a jpeg. Can you help? Thanks.
It’s working OK for me but you do need to click on the download link and not the graphic!
