November’s free desktop wallpaper comes from the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong in Bhutan and was taken during this year’s annual tsechu (festival).
Masked dances play an important part of the annual tsechus and the traditions associated with them vary from village to village. The dances, or Chhams, are often performed with the intention of communicating an important religious message to the audience and many can be traced back centuries. Most chhams are performed by the monks who reside at or nearby the dzong where the tsechu is taking place.
I managed to catch this dancer as he entered the bright sunlight in the temple’s central courtyard. He is performing the Tungam Chham, a dance with deep religious significance. Dressed as gods, the dancers tempt evil spirits towards them before dancing around them and finally slaying them with a ritual dagger. The Tungam Chham tells the audience how the Gods free the world of evil spirits.
Despite the sacred content of these ritual dances, the tsechu is a remarkably relaxed event. The audience are free to move about the courtyard, which is a boon for visiting photographers.
I have made the wallpaper available in the usual selection of sizes and added a 480×320 pixel version at 163 ppi for iPhone users who would like to add a splash of colour to their device, as pictured (right) during one of my frequent tea breaks.
