Bangkok Photo School: Photographers’ Reference Card

Visual Poetry: Chris OrwigTowards the end of last month’s Bangkok Photo School classes, where we were teaching both Beginners and Intermediate classes, we launched a competition to design a photographer’s cue card.

The prize for the designer of the best cue card was a copy of Chris Orwig’s excellent Visual Poetry book, which was clearly enough of a motivation to prompt dozens of innovative and creative designs to be submitted.

The aim of the competition was to produce a handy, credit card-sized guide that could serve as a quick reminder of those technical basics that sometimes slip our minds in the heat of the moment.

Young Tony West, one of our Beginners, produced a design that ticked all the right boxes. The double-sided reference card will be especially useful for photographers who’d like to be reminded of the basic principles that we employ when photographing: apertures, depth-of-field, exposure control etc. I especially like the list of compositional suggestions.

Tony is currently on a flight to some far-flung destination, eagerly reading his copy of Visual Poetry no doubt. I think this little card is a fine example of visual poetry and am looking forward to seeing it printed up, ready for us to hand out to students at our future courses. Indeed, we like the card so much that we’re thinking of giving them away online. However, how best to do that? Any suggestions?

NB: Thanks for the suggestions received in the comments and via e-mail. We will be making a copy of this reference card available for download in the very near future. If you’re interested in getting a copy for yourself then keep an eye on the blog (perhaps subscribe to the RSS feed). I would suggest that you don’t download and print this JPEG version as it probably won’t come out very well but wait for the glorious, shiny version that I’m going to persuade Tony to produce for you.

3 suggestions all of which cold be charged for or free dependng on Tony’s desire:

1.Simplest – High resolution image that others can load into Graphic programme, pdf, Powerpoint etc or even upload to moo.com and have printed as Postcard.
    2. Best copyright control: 2 page eBook as pdf (using inDesign to layout). I can do this for Tony if he wishes. This would then allow accurate printing.

    ALSO
    4. Would make a GREAT app on the iphone and Android. I have some developers that I can put Tony in touch with if he is interested. If it goes well he could make some good money – enough to pay for some gear or another workshop!

  2. I’d have LOVED to have had these to hand out at two workshops I just taught. It’s a wonderful idea.

It would be wonderful to have these for my stocking stuffers! Such a great idea and graphically beautiful too.

It is a wonderful card with good graphics–my only niggle is the small Blue print on black background makes it very difficult to read particularly in low light.

Great quick reference sheet! I like any of the ideas – with class giveaway being the topmost! Nothing like keeping a laminated card in your camera bag, as a ready reckoner!

  6. Wow. I’m very impressed by this card. Top notch work and well deserving of the prize. You should be selling these at your next class!

Would have loved to use these when I was training photographers for studio work back in the day.
