I’ve been catching up on some processing today, uploading files for a client and these four images from Bangkok markets fell into place beside each other in my Lightroom catalogue so I thought I would share them with you.
Bangkok markets are always enjoyable places to photograph but, after dark, when much of the illumination comes courtesy of a single tungsten light bulb suspended from the top of a market stall or street vendor’s cart, is a glorious time. Exposure can be tricky of course but a little clever metering and some exposure compensation adjustments can bring out the very best in the atmospheric lighting conditions.
Beautiful work! EVERY time I look at your feed, it just makes me want to travel to Thailand even more. Thanks for sharing!
Great shots. You are expanding the performance envelope of your camera with these exposures!
Great shots Gavin – the lighting and colors are just beautiful.
Nice work, Gavin. Thanks for sharing the shots. These are some great moments.
And…best of all, when you are done taking photos, you can eat.
Nice work Gavin!

Love the ambiance of the markets … love your work!
Quick question – Did you use a tripod?
The reason I ask is that I’ve just booked a flight to India and would like to do some similar night photography to this. But I want to travel light and don’t own a tripod at the moment. I don’t like buying things unless they are going to make me money, so I’m not sure about whether I should buy one. I’m also unsure about standing around a busy road (or anywhere for that matter) alone with a tripod and expensive camera gear. If I buy one it’ll be a Gitzo Traveler.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
