We tried. We really did. We tried to carry it off. The mug-shot. The “Hey, here’s your prize and a warm hand-shake” shot.
We failed.
Prize-winning students were cajoled out onto the balcony at Long Table Restaurant, high above the streets of Bangkok today in order to receive their well-deserved prizes.
Young Geoff Costley won a copy of Chris Orwig’s excellent “Visual Poetry” book for, well, just for being Geoff.
However, voicing some concern about the possibility that the stage-managed shots might end up looking a little, err, stage-managed, we decided that launching Geoff’s prize in the direction of Geoff’s face might make for a more entertaining image.
Fortunately, young Charan Malhotra was in the wings, waiting to bring a sense of decorum to the proceedings. Charan won a ColorChecker Passport, courtesy of the lovely people at X-Rite for winning our “Best Photo from a Field-Trip” competition. Charan, who is the very definition of an enthusiastic and eager student, also won the competition for “Most phone calls taken during a class” for which, sadly, there is no prize, only global recognition.
Probably.
By the time we got to photograph Jenjad Srisonkarm, winner of a ColorMunki Photo device, again courtesy of the gorgeous, sexy people at X-Rite, the situation had become somewhat ridiculous. I have no idea quite what we were laughing at by this point but as Jenjad pulled his “I’m a gameshow host” face, it had all descended into farce.
Finally, possibly the funniest photo taken of your humble host since 1973 when I was captured wearing a T-shirt bearing the legend “I’m playful as a porpoise”. If this image makes you laugh half as much as it does me then you’ll still be sniggering as you go to your bed this evening. Hey, I’m only here for your amusement, after all.
For those of you living within Bangkok or nearby, our Autumn evening class schedule has just been released and you have the chance to not only attend our vibrant, entertaining, educational and informative evening classes but also, possibly, to appearing in a similar photograph to those shown above before the end of the year. You have been warned.
Our most recent courses were attended by students not only from Bangkok but we were also privileged to be able to invite participants who had travelled from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Islamabad specifically to attend classes. It’ll be no surprise that our Autumn evening classes are also selling like hot cakes. Book your place now.
Whilst we’re here, I’d also like to extend grateful thanks to our other lovely sponsors at F-stop, Lensbaby, Soundslides and Photoshelter. We love you more than words alone can say.
Gavin: We want to see the photos that the students took to win too!!!! Think you can do a follow up article with a photo of them and there winning photograph?
Good point T-Roy, you can see the winning pictures and also Tim Bowman’s excellent slideshow on the Bangkok Photo School web site at http://www.bangkokphotoschool.com/2010/08/summer_2010_competition_winners/.
Enjoy!
