Travel & Humanitarian Photos
When I started out as a breathless, young, freelance travel photographer, my definition of success was to have had an image appear on the front cover of a Lonely Planet guide book.
Lonely Planet books are always gorgeous and they’ve become the very epitome of great travel literature and what some of us still lovingly refer to as “travel photography”. So, despite the fact that my goals have shifted and been embellished somewhat since those early days, it’s still very satisfying to see one of my images being used on the front cover of a Lonely Planet guide book. If you’re heading to Bhutan in the next two or three years, this is what you’ll see.

Great image, sums it up the place stylishly. However, what did they pay and what licencing rights do they now hold on that image?
I ask as it’s wonderful meeting one’s goals but the bottom line is we still need to be able to keep making those striking images for the book buyers, the publishers and ourselves.

I hope it will suffice to say that I supply stock images to Lonely Planet and they have several thousand of my images available on a Rights Managed basis. They pay the industry standard rate so, to answer your rather inelegant question about what they pay, mind your own business. They paid the correct amount for a front cover based on the print run and distribution for the book.
They’ve licensed the image on a Rights Managed basis and I retain the copyright. If you read through my previous blog posts you will see that this is how I work. I hope that answers your rather impolite question.

They chose a great shot for the cover. I love the texture and rich color. A very simple uncluttered shot as well. Congrats Gavin…I too hope to have a photo grace the cover of a publication, especially one as well respected as Lonely Planet.

Very nice pic Gavin. Just returned to BKK the end of last month from Bhutan where I had taken a group of photographers, and they were all saying how the LP book needed to be updated. I guess the next group I take over will have the new book.
