Postcard from Pushkar #1

I’m in Jaipur today, packing in readiness for the evening train to Delhi. There’s just time to send you this quick postcard from Pushkar, where the following things happened:

1. It rained. For the first time during the Camel Fair for 25 years.
2. It rained a lot!
3. I hadn’t planned on meeting Nevada Wier but bumped into her as she leapt out from behind a camel. No, I didn’t ask what she’d been doing there.
4. I did plan on meeting Karl Grobl but couldn’t find him despite searching beneath every camel at the fair.
5. I didn’t even know that Joyce Birkenstock was in India so it was a great surprise when she also leapt out from behind a camel.
6. I hired a motorbike and have one of those “My bike broke down in India and was fixed by a group of exceptionally friendly and generous people” stories. Pictures and the full tale to follow in the next few days.
7. I witnessed the extraordinary “Wall of Death”.
8. I had the opportunity to take a hot-air balloon flight over Pushkar which was, simply put, breathtaking.

More news on these bike-riding, balloon-gliding, camel-avoiding, death-defying antics in coming days. In the meantime, I hope you like these images taken during my first evening at this year’s fair.

    Hi Gavin,
Sorry I missed you at Pushkar, I was looking for you and Nevada the whole time. I’m glad you guys found each other. It’s nice to know that she’s recovered from the accident and is back on the circuit. Anyway, we shot in the rain that morning and then it cleared. That light we had just before sunset was totally amazing as you know; and as your pictures demonstrate. I gotta’ tell you Gavin, I’ve been doing Pushkar for 8 years, and I never saw light like that afternoon and the next morning, you certainly picked a good year to come. Safe travels, Karl

    HI Gavin,
I have been waiting for more blog entries! And this was worth waiting for. The photos are beautiful, I especially like the one with the camel and the sunlight. I am trying to get that effect in my photographs but can never get the rays of sunlight. I just get unsightly rectangles of light on the subject! Is there a technique you could explain quickly please? I have read somewhere that it works best with a wide focal length. Is that true? Looking forward to some shots from the air in the balloon.
