Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past. – Henry Ward Beecher

“Little Thatch”
I hope that the arrival of a new year has brought you the clarity of vision to see those opportunities that you possess and the inspiration to pursue your goals with renewed enthusiasm, vim and vigour.
I managed to escape to the cosiest of cosy English country cottages for a few days in order to relax, reflect, reinvigorate and replenish. This gorgeous little thatched cottage on the icy south coast of England is named, appropriately, “Little Thatch”, is over 300 years old and was the perfect place to escape to. After what proved to be a hectic, challenging but immensely rewarding year in 2010, it was good to switch off and to recharge the batteries. I haven’t slept so soundly for months!
The images below appear as they came out of the camera. Shooting JPEGs with my much-loved Lensbaby Composer with a custom Picture Profile to introduce the Sepia toning has negated the need for Lightroom, Photoshop or any other post-production. I relish the simplicity of this approach.
I also enjoyed shooting just for the love of it. Returning to some of my favourite coastal towns, beaches and enjoying what is arguably the “Best Walk in the World”, from the Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers to Swanage and returning by way of the glorious steam railway is always a treat and spending time with friends and family makes it all the more memorable.
I hope that you enjoy these images. More importantly though, I hope that the coming year brings you great happiness and all those things that you would wish for yourself. I hope to meet even more inspiring photographers in 2011 (this blog and my photographic work have introduced me to some terrific people and firm friends in recent years) and hope that if you are planning on visiting South-East Asia in 2011, you’ll drop by and say “Hi”.
Cheers!

Happy New Year! I do plan to visit South-East Asia this year and would be more than happy to meet you again in Bangkok or wherever you are at the time.
All best!!
Feels like a dreamy holiday.
What a wonderfully original way to view those sights we take so much for granted. Truly inspirational Gavin – wish I could say I’ll be seeing you soon, but not much hope of long distance travel. Keep the photos coming, I can still imagine being there!
Happy new year for you too Gavin, Very interesting effects with the lensbaby… Glad to know that you had a great time.
Oh, that brought back some fond memories of West Bay!
Don’t remember it being that colour though
Beautiful images. I just love the south coast of England.
Even when you just go out and play with your camera you create masterpiecies. I’m just envious, and am reminded that I’ve got areas similar to this a few miles from here. … Better find that camera!
really nice! pics feel/look quite cold, yet warm and traditional at the same time….
Happy New Year my friend. May this year bring you all you hope and dream for. Let’s have a pipe together sooner rather than later!
Wow, those are something. I think I like the earlier photos better where more is in focus: there is at least something for the eye to latch onto there.
What nostalgic fun! Happy New Year from Ubud. Planning to get to Bangkok at the end of the month to go to the Flower Festival in Chiang Mai. Hope we can meet up for sugar and spice.
Hi Gavin, Happy New Year to you too! You beat me to it! I love the effect of the lens baby. Maybe I should get one and have another go with it, as I didn’t really get the hang of it. I just looked at Anna Kuperberg’s blog and she has some beautiful pictures of India which you might be interested in seeing. Since you introduced her to us during the course, I have been following her work.
Inspirational pictures as always! Makes me nostalgic for Blighty…
I can tell you were having fun with the Lensbaby! great images, as usual. Happy New Year to you too!
Wow, what beautiful images. I just love how you simplified down and then produced such fantastic results. I’m going to have to try the same! Sure looks like lots of fun!
Brian

I really must get out with my Lensbaby more often
Here’s to a great 2011
Cheers
