Welcome to the Year of the Rabbit

Chinese New Year

A placid year, very much welcomed and needed after the ferocious year of the Tiger. We should go off to some quiet spot to lick our wounds and get some rest after all the battles of the previous year.

Chinese New Year

These images were taken during recent photo workshops in Bangkok.

Wherever you are and whatever your plans are for the year ahead, I wish you a peaceful and placid year of the Rabbit.

Gavin, that shot of the little girl is amazing! What a cutie!

  2. Masher says:

    Agreed: wonderful shot.
It’s almost like they cleared the road, just for you and your subject.
    They didn’t, did they?

The police in Chinatown were being a little over-zealous this afternoon, keeping everyone on the side of the road despite the fact that nothing was happening on the road and continued to not happen for three hours!

So how this little girl managed to find her way into the middle of the road is a mystery but when I spotted her I thought this perspective might make for a nice juxtaposition.

Having battled with the police all afternoon and pushed my Press Pass to the full extent of it’s usefulness, I was delighted to see the girl in the middle of the road, looking quietly defiant and wilfully independent. That stance, that look, that gentle determination summed up exactly how I felt today.

If she doesn’t grow up to be Prime Minister of Thailand, I’ll be surprised.

Great shots! The police really were a nuisance all day long – with or specially without a press pass.

Awesome shots Gavin…love both. You really got lucky on that 1st one. Way to be in the right place at the right time.

  5. Gavin says:

Thanks JJ. Although I wouldn’t put it down to luck alone. As somebody much cleverer than me once said, “I find the harder I work, the luckier I get”.

    Cheers Deb!

Wow, Gavin. Those are beautiful shots. But even more touching is the description of the year. I had not known we were in the year of the Tiger and what that meant. My family’s year matched the ferociousness and we are in much need for quiet licking of our wounds.

I attended a local Dragon Dance performance yesterday celebrating the new year and had a great time photographing it. I also spoke to the group’s trainer who educated me quite a bit about the history and meaning of the Dragon Dances.

Happy New Year to you and my best wishes for a peaceful and fulfilling year.
