When I speak to people who live in China they often talk about the balancing act that the country is facing – trying to protect the traditional whilst allowing room for the modern. That juxtaposition is very evident in the ancient – and modern – city of Kunming, in Yunnan.
Downtown Kunming has room for the city’s ever-increasing number of cars and offers employment opportunities for flag-wielding traffic officials.

The traditional way to transport your pigeon – for when he gets tired of flying home, I suppose.
A man selling bird cages takes a break in the market
The end of the day and a bird cage seller starts to carry his stock home
Carrying a basket of vegetables home against a backdrop of advertising for the yet-to-be-built, modern market
Some traditional wooden buildings remain amidst the skyscrapers
Office workers walk home just before sunset, their view of modern developments briefly hidden behind an old wall.
Having been to Kunmin 6 years ago, the place looks far cleaner than it was then! Nice set Gavin. I like the bike/pigeon pic a lot.

Nice series of images. Classic China seems to dissappear right before our eyes. Is it too late to experience it?
Nice series Gavin. The last one (the workers walking home by the wall) is especially amusing for anyone who can read Chinese. The red banner advert is for “Firewall” Engineering and goes on to claim that it is especially effective for holding back catastrophic fire (events) but it appears some wag has taken a cigarette lighter or something to part of the word that I presume is ‘events’ and burnt it off the banner!
