Loving every moment at 1/15th of a second.

I’m in Siem Reap with fellow photographers Marco Ryan, Matt Brandon and Karl Grobl. Truth be told, it’s a real treat. We’ve been blessed with a group of photographers who are showing all the traits that you’d wish for as a tour leader: enthusiasm, dedication, tolerance and modesty.

This tour is a little different from most, indeed “tour” does the operation a disservice, it’s really a workshop and boy, our photographers are working hard.

We’ve been helping them to make the small but potentially awkward step from photographers to what you might call “Visual Storytellers”. In pairs, they have been collaborating on finding, researching and photographing a “behind-the-scenes” story in Siem Reap. With the aid of tuk-tuk drivers who are doubling up as interpreters/fixers, they’ve been out and about from dawn to dusk and beyond, learning about the lives of local people; monks, orphans, street children and others. The stories that are developing are engaging and inspiring and I’m delighted that we have the time to devote to producing stories which go far beyond the usual tourists’ view of Siem Reap.

Me? I’ve been helping out where possible. We’ve had time for lectures where we’ve discussed story-telling techniques, storage and archiving, Lightroom, Soundslides and we’ve begun regular critique sessions where participants can request feedback on their work, seek direction and guidance. Things are developing nicely and I’m looking forward to seeing the finished stories at the end of our first week.

So my own camera hasn’t been in use much, which is fine, but there have been a couple of occasions where I haven’t been able to resist switching to Shutter Priority and dialling in 1/15th of a second for a bit of panning practice.

I hope that whatever you’re doing this week, you’re having as much fun as we are.

Awesome shots Gavin as usual. I will be definitely trying some panning shot from a car or a motorcycle.

Good luck with your panning, it’s always fun.
