You may remember the image below from a previous blog post. I photographed the Peacock Dancer in one of the cloisters at Angkor Wat just a few weeks ago and so was delighted to have an opportunity to revisit the same location with some of the Peacock Dancer’s friends.
With my fellow instructors at the Angkor Photo Workshop, Matt Brandon, Marco Ryan and Karl Grobl, we went in search of the best light at Angkor at the dusky end of the day and introduced our students to a more carefully orchestrated portrait session.
I’m hoping to return to Angkor next week when I have more time and am thinking of continuing this series of “Images from Khmer Mythology”. I think there’s a theme emerging and I’m keen to see where it leads.
For now, I’m enjoying the opportunity to kick back and enjoy the mellow ambience of the FCC Hotel in Siem Reap. All around me, students from our workshop are putting the finishing touches to the multimedia stories that they have worked so hard on all week. In a few hours we will begin the process of judging, then the slideshows will be projected onto the big wall on the FCC terrace before dinner this evening. Winners and Runners-Up will receive great prizes from sponsors at F-Stop and X-Rite and the competition is looking to be hot.
I’ll post the winners and favourite stories here in the next few days.
Gavin…I just love the beauty in your images so much. You make it look so easy (and of course it is anything but!)
Gorgeous use of light and shadows and well orchestrated subjects. Did you need permission from the Apsara Authorities for this shoot inside Angkor as they can be very sensitive about what may be considered commercial photography?
Beautiful work.
Sorry Gavin – I meant to put this previous post question here.
I’m intrigued as to how you determine exposure for these images. Are you spot metering of the faces?
Hi Gavin,
These took my breath away when I saw them earlier today.
Wonderful – and I wish they were mine
I presume there was a festival or special occasion on during the shoot, as I never saw anyone dressed up like this when I was here in 2005.
Great use of light. Love the shadows and mix of colour.
Wow. Wonderful photos. Beautiful light in them.
