I’ve enjoyed wall-to-wall photo workshops in Bangkok over the weekend and the trend continues next week. I’ve photographed with enthusiastic clients at the colourful Pak Khlong Talaat (Flower Market), in the early-morning light in Chinatown, the small and aromatic fishing town of Mahachai, the enchantingly bizarre Mae Khlong market – where the train chugs through [...]
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of a day photographing some of the staff from Diethelm Travel in Bangkok. We were shooting for their promotional material and, despite appearances, worked pretty hard all day. These aren’t professional models, that’s the Director of Sales and Marketing! It’s always a pleasure to spend the day with [...]
“A placid year, very much welcomed and needed after the ferocious year of the Tiger. We should go off to some quiet spot to lick our wounds and get some rest after all the battles of the previous year.“ These images were taken during recent photo workshops in Bangkok. Wherever you are and whatever your [...]
How a cheap waterproof camera led to a new project
Images from Hualamphong Railway Station in Bangkok, Thailand
News of an exciting new photography school franchise.
Regular readers of my blog will know that when things go quiet it’s because I’ve been busy with… well, you know… work. Yes, one of the drawbacks of being a working photographer is that occasionally one has to actually work. Hence the paucity of blog posts in recent weeks, for which I offer my humble [...]
When I began photographing the Red Shirt protests, over six weeks ago, it would have been easy to confuse the gathering at Bangkok’s Phan Fa Bridge for the Thai equivalent of a European music festival. You could never make the same mistake now.
An escalation of anti-Government Red Shirts congregate outside the 11th Infantry Barracks in Bangkok in an attempt to force the Prime Minister to dissolve Government
The fifteenth day of the anti-Government protests saw the Red Shirts take to the streets of Bangkok once again.
The carnival atmosphere returned, on the surface at least, to the anti-Government Red Shirt protests in Bangkok today. The Reds temporarily abandoned their stronghold at Pha Fa Bridge and set-off on a rally through the city streets.
When we sit down each day and do our work, power concentrates around us
More late nights and early mornings at the Pak Khlong Talat market.
I hope that the battles that are still taking place in Bangkok as I write this (Monday 13th) will have subsided by the time this post appears and we can concentrate on more upifting things. Such as… a short time-lapse sequence of clouds forming over Bangkok. Taken with a Canon G9 camera, set to take [...]
Victory Monument is usually a very busy transport hub in the centre of Bangkok. However, yesterday it was the scene of fighting between army forces and Red Shirt protesters. By mid-morning the army had gained control over the area and the only real traffic consisted of these armoured vehicles, circling the monument, no doubt as [...]
Tension in Bangkok continues to rise after bullets and tear gas were fired in the early hours of the morning. Over 70 people are reported to have been injured. There’s a strange atmosphere in the city today. Many people have left Bangkok, not necessarily because of the protests but because it’s Songkran, Thai New Year, [...]
Sadly the metaphoric clouds hanging over Bangkok today aren’t nearly as light and fluffy as these, taken from my balcony first thing this morning. Troops and protesters clashed overnight and the BBC is reporting that tear gas and bullets were used. Many people have been injured and there is talk of the battle moving towards [...]
I managed to escape for a day last week whilst scouting out possible locations for a forthcoming Photo School weekend workshop and headed towards Hua Hin, stopping at a variety of potential photo hot spots along the way. I’ve picked out a few images from the day, which proved to be great fun. Standing in [...]
I’ve enjoyed leading several photo workshops recently and they’re invariably a pleasure. I’m sure that I get as much from our forays around Pak Klong Talaat and Chinatown as the participants do. Matt Brandon recently wrote a lovely post about how watching his daughter take photos had inspired him and I find that something similar [...]
The first big storm of the season arrived over Bangkok this evening and I managed to grab a few frames after what was a rather delicious home-made curry. But I digress. I tried a slightly different approach tonight and it seems to have paid off. Previously I would have used the lowest ISO setting on [...]
Following up from last week’s post and slideshow about photographing the Wai Kroo Tattoo Festival in Thailand, here are a few reflections on the day. I’d seen photos of the Tattoo Festival before attending this year but nothing can really prepare you for the unpredictable nature of the event when it’s in full-flow. I guess [...]
